Dr. Morgan Callaway, Jr. was a longtime member of the University of Texas English faculty and a leading American authority on English literature. An esteemed professor for 46 years, his scholarship was credited with helping to elevate UT into a nationally recognized university. Thousands of Texas students benefited from his high standards of instruction. He was recognized as an authority on Anglo-Saxon and old English, authoring many treatises including "The Historic Study of the Mother Tongue." His numerous accomplishments include serving as literary editor of the Library of Southern Literature and vice president of the Modern Language Association of America. He was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Modern Humanities Research Association. In recognition of his great and long-continued service as teacher and philologist, SMU was honored to confer upon Dr. Morgan Callaway, Jr. the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
